Walter Geer III
Chief Experience Design Officer
Walter Geer III is a veteran of advertising and one of the industry’s most impactful leaders known for his high-level creative work and his tenacious advocacy for the advancement of BIPOC advertising professionals.
Throughout his 20-year career, Walter has architected market-first usability labs, applying biometric research to the development of creative executions and minimizing risk through his robust understanding how consumer emotions and demographics impact brand engagement.
Less than two years after joining VMLY&R as an ECD of experience design, in April 2022, Walter was promoted to chief experience design officer. Through this role, he drives the creation of innovative design solutions within VMLY&R’s connected health practice, as well as the transformation of talent and capability across the high-growth group.
Walter holds six U.S. patents for digital ad formats and has developed ad products and implemented creative strategies for a variety of publishers and leading technology and media companies including Google, Viacom, New York Times, and MySpace.
After realizing that there may be fewer than 10 Black ECDs in a sea of over 350,000 employees across the top five holding agencies in the U.S., in March 2022, Walter collaborated with New York Festival to produce “Black Madison Avenue.” This documentary featured seven of the Black ECDs exploring the current state of adland. In 2020, Walter partnered with a colleague to launch Diverse Creatives, a free online hub for agencies and recruiters to search for and connect with Black and brown creatives. Walter’s award-winning work and tangible impact across the industry have earned him positions on the board of the 4A’s and on the executive board of the AD Club of New York. Through these roles, Walter openly challenges adland norms and advocates for a more diverse and equitable industry.
A prolific writer and speaker, Walter is known for his blunt and to-the-point delivery and for his embodiment of the authenticity, passion, and energy needed to challenge and improve the advertising landscape.
In the past two years, Walter has spoken at Adweek’s Brandweek, AdMonsters, ADCOLOR, Minority Report, Allyship & Action, and The One Club for Creativity’s Creative Month. He even led a session at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity titled “So, You Say You Can’t Find Black Talent?”
