National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC)

NMAAHC Website

Guided by its founding vision, the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has staked its ground as the trusted authority on the story of Black America. In less than a year since it first opened its doors, the Museum has become a place of pilgrimage, welcoming visitors from around the country and around the world, knitting together the stories of Black America into a narrative that is ripe with meaning for all people. It has become a place that provides audiences with a useful and usable history that allows them to be inspired by the past, explore the present and imagine the future

The Museum is located on the National Mall, only steps away from the Washington Monument. It is Smithsonian’s only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, art, history and culture. Through exhibitions, interactives, publications, and public programs, the Museum presents an opportunity to help all Americans see just how central African American history is for all of us.  The museum’s collection which includes Harriet Tubman’s hymnal and lace shawl, Nat Turner’s bible, a Jim Crow Railroad car, Chuck Berry’s red Cadillac, and thousands more items, exemplifies and honors the history of African Americans. The Museum uses African American history and culture as a lens into what it means to be an American. When you consider values like resiliency, optimism, and spirituality, there are few places where one can better understand their origin and evolution than through African American history and culture.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will remain the most trusted, most used, and most visited site to help America grapple with the unsettled dialogue on race. It is the source of knowledge, inspiration, and ultimately the place that help all Americans remember and understand, and by remembering the past, foster a spirit of reconciliation and healing.
