Government Alert: Response to ICANN proposal

American Advertising Federation President and CEO James Edmund Datri released the following statement in response to the Internet Corporations for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) proposal to proceed with a plan to allow for a virtually unlimited amount of new top level domains:

The proposal by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to allow virtually unlimited new web addresses is worse than a solution in search of a problem, it is a potentially devastating problem for which the only solution may be abandonment. ICANN has not demonstrated a compelling need for new top level domains. ICANN has not adequately assessed the devastating economic impact of the proposal. In our view ICANN has not sufficiently considered the immense danger this poses to the Internet ecosystem, brands and consumers. What ICANN has done is blithely dismissed overwhelming opposition by a business community that stands to suffer immense economic harm should the proposal be implemented.

As far back as December of 2008, AAF participated in comments to ICANN warning of significant problems with the proposal.
