Iowa State University’s Jay Newell to Receive AAF’s Distinguished Advertising Educator Award
The American Advertising Federation will honor Jay Newell as 2016 recipient of the award for his significant contributions to advertising education.
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 3, 2016—Jay Newell, Ph.D., Associate Professor at Iowa State University, was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Advertising Educator Award earlier this week. Dr. Newell will be honored at the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) Luncheon at ADMERICA, the AAF’s annual national conference at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.
Dr. Newell’s innovative teaching methods and unparalleled commitment to student mentorship embody the professional dedication that the Distinguished Advertising Educator Award seeks to highlight each year. His tenure reflects teaching excellence and student advisement, scholarly research, publications and creative contributions, as well as active participation in professional advertising organizations — all of which must be demonstrated for eligibility.
After joining the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in 2003, Dr. Newell set out to bridge the gap between the classroom and the profession through the integration of technology into his undergraduate and graduate-level courses. By leveraging the school’s alumni network, he established a stand-out project titled “Wednesday Wake Up Call” in which students participate in weekly conference calls with alumni employed at top ad agencies to engage them with the business of advertising at an early stage.
“Dr. Newell is one of the most talented advertising teachers in the nation," said Michael Bugeja, a director and professor at Iowa State University. “He balances technology with interpersonal interaction; he influences professors across media platforms and disciplines; and he engages students as a coach, mentor and friend.”
Dr. Newell is well-known for his enthusiasm toward student advising. From their first weeks, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in co-curricular activities and to build networks for employment opportunities. He advises the ISU Ad Club, Cardinal & Gold, which has won several awards from the American Advertising Awards and Diversity Awards. His involvement in the industry has contributed to his success as a leader in the advertising division of the AEJMC and active presence throughout the AAF’s Des Moines Ad Club.
“Jay has the ability to seek out the creative genius behind every student," said Kat Mogongwa, Student, Iowa State University. “That’s what makes him a great teacher and an astute advertising professional. His credible resume, passion, and leadership have impacted me to strive and reach the goals he accomplished in his professional career. He’s a true inspiration for all of us.”
Dr. Newell will be honored at ADMERICA during the NSAC Luncheon. The NSAC Luncheon will feature the announcement of the winning NSAC team, the presentation of various education awards, a mosaic keynote and the NSAC winning team’s presentation. Each year, the conference brings leading advertising professionals, agencies, clients, media companies and college students under one roof for education, inspiration, innovation, collaboration and celebration of the advertising industry. The conference also showcases the industry’s best work during the American Advertising Awards and Mosaic Awards, and future talent during the NSAC finals.
