Creative Co-Chair and Founder, 72andSunny
As Founder and Creative Co-Chair at 72andSunny, John Boiler helped lead 72andSunny to embrace its mission to expand and diversify the creative class. In 2017, the focus for diversification was narrowed to three groups, which were most underrepresented in 2017—women in creative roles, women in leadership roles and ethnic minorities throughout the company.
With John’s leadership and guidance, 72andSunny is one of the founding partners of the Creative Alliance, created by Civic Nation, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that uses organizing, engagement and public awareness to address some of the nation’s most pressing challenges, including White House-launched initiatives. For its part, 72andSunny is bringing creative training, tools and experience to the masses—all in the service of making creative careers more accessible. For the past four years, 72andSunny has partnered with DaVinci Schools, a charter school network that serves students from more than 80 zip codes and from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, helping developing curriculum for high school students while also offering workshops, bootcamps, internships and mentorship programs. To date, 72andSunny has brought overall awareness of the creative industry to 1,403 students through more than 770 student engagement opportunities between Da Vinci and 72andSunny.
In an effort to create diversity at scale, John helped launch the 72andSunny Playbook, an open-source guide to the agency’s diversity efforts, in October 2017. Within 12 hours of launching online, the Playbook had more than 6,000 hits, with 1,200 visitors spending an average of three minutes and 46 seconds on the Playbook webpage. The Playbook encouraged readers to email ideas and feedback directly to the agency and Version 2.0 is already underway. The Playbook outlines the successes and challenges of 72andSunny’s diversity initiatives with the intention of helping other companies implement their own.
To date, 72andSunny has introduced 10,000 people to the potential of creative careers and its opportunities through its various programs. Internally, 72andSunny outpaces the industry in many areas of diversity: 15% of its creative directors are women; 35% of the group director level and above are female, includes more than 30 nationalities globally and the company is only 6% away from achieving the level of diversity of the total U.S. population.
In November 2017, 72andSunny became one of the first companies to become 3% Certified, being one of only two agencies recognized.
72andSunny has twice been recognized as "Agency of the Year" by both AdAge and Adweek as well as earning the top spot on the Ad Age "A-List" for five consecutive years. Twice recognized and included in Fast Company’s annual "50 Most Innovative Company" issue, 72andSunny was the only advertising company to make the list.
John’s creative work has been recognized in every major awards show garnering multiple golds in Cannes, One Show and D&AD shows.
